I write because as a Social Scientist, sharing my observations and discoveries help to grow my understanding of society. I write because I want to critically analyze what I’ve read about. Writing is a way for me to organize my thoughts, claims and thesis. My perception about writing have not evolved this semester. This Social Science course had many intriguing readings and topics that I mainly wanted to discuss through speech rather than through writing. When I did have to write, I realized, as a Social Scientist, writing is important because I need to share my observations and research with other Social Scientist so they can see my perspective and build off of it.
The first essay of this course, Peer Interview, was most intriguing to me because my partner had an interest in a topic I love to talk about, K-Pop. We tried Face-Timing and screen recording when I interviewed her but the audio did not pick up. This lead to me having to message my partner through iMessage regarding questions I forgot her answer to. This is something we could have avoided. I had knowledge of the focus topic prior to writing the essay so I knew what I wanted to nit pick and talk about. As well as what I needed to research to backup my knowledge. The second essay of this course, Community Observation, I had a strong idea about which community I wanted to observe but my mistake was searching for a forum. If the community I chosen was a community I could observe in the field, I would have been able to be more efficient with turning in my work.
In terms of course learning objectives, I was on top of the readings and was always eager to discuss them. Essay one taught me the effectiveness of collaboration and the social aspect of writing. I was able to find a book from the CCNY database that supported my reasoning as to why HoH/Deaf community are marginalized. I was able to effectively analyze quote I used or summarize ideas I wanted to include in my essay. I’d say I achieved most of the course’s learning objectives. Compared to pass courses, this is the first course I did all the readings for and enjoyed it. This includes the help of PowerPoints provided to us by Professor Kay Bell. With the help of the readings and PowerPoints, I am more aware of what is considered a marginalized community. I’ve learned that there are issues unique to all marginalized community but most importantly I understand it is important to be aware of the issues so I can help advocate for groups I believe are being sidelined wrongfully.
I am working on procrastination. This is an issue I’ve suffered from when it comes to topics I care very little about. I need to work on time management. I also need to work on critical thinking. Critical thinking to me is what’s below the surface and one thing can affect many other things, what are those many other things? One thing I feel like I’ve mastered in this course is the importance of coming prepared to class. I have honestly fell in love with doing readings because I love to be apart of discussions. Having a voice in class shows my confident side which doesn’t come out too often. I appreciated the fact that Professor Kay Bell created such a comfortable environment to learn in. This is the first Social Science course I was able to enjoy whole-heartedly.
